PGA Of Nigeria Taking Bold Steps posted Saturday 21st of April 2018

Organising tournnaments all year round has been the clamour of Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN) members. This is because the belief is that it will not only keep the players busy, but would improve their welfare.

This is the practice in developed climes such as the United States, Britain, Spain, Australia, and France among other countries.

Professionals like Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Rory Mcllroy have made fortunes from golf but not without tournaments.

Interestingly, the PGA of Nigeria has been waxing stronge recently as the first quarter of thr year has witnessed four tournaments and still counting.

The tournaments are Captain Okunbo Birthday Tournament (Pro-Am) in Bennin City, Kadinvest Open in Kaduna, David Mark Birthday Tournament at Otukpo in Benue State and the Radix Pension Masters Classic in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Still ahead are Governor's Cup in Dutse, Governor's Cup in Jos, and Ojerinde Memorial at Otukpo in Benue State among others.

There is no denying the fact that PGA players are happy with the progress made by the association in that it has never been this good in the time past.

Chidi Tobias of Ikeja Club, Lagos and one of the top 10 PGAN players once told DAILY INDEPENDENT, "We need more tournaments, because it will improve our welfare.

"More tournaments mean more money. At the moment, things are not easy with us because what we earn in one tournament cannot even sustain somebody for a month and the few tournaments are not even regular."

Oche Odoh, PGAN most travelled player on his part had also emphasised the need for investors to partner with the association to augment its financial base.

"If investors can come on board to partner PGAN - it will be a big plus for the association, because more tournaments are all about having sponsorship which boils down to funds. PGAN needs money," Odoh said.

Lawal on assumption of office in 2016 promised more tournaments and he is certainly living up to the expectation even as he needs to maintain the tempo.
